Abstract:
In recent years, unhealthy lifestyle has been adopted by an increasing portion of the human population, which has led to a steady rise of chronic diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, lung disease, and diabetes. Although the link between lifestyle and health has been well established, there is no objective method or device to evaluate personal lifestyle. The subjective self-reporting method in common use is unreliable and inaccurate. We have developed a wearable computer called eButton, a personal hub collecting multiple forms of data for assessment of health and wellness. The eButton has a small size and a light weight, resembling a common circular chest button. The eButton is a complex miniature computer with a powerful CPU and an array of sensors, such as a pair of cameras, a light sensor, a motion sensor (accelerometer), an orientation sensor (gyroscope), a barometer, and a global positioning system (GPS) receiver. eButton is designed to document health-related events of the wearer, such as diet, physical activity and lifestyle. This presentation will give an overview on hardware design of the device and computational algorithms for food identification, food segmentation, portion size measurement, calorie expenditure estimation, and sedentary activity assessment in daily life. The eButton has also been studied to evaluate children’s diet and wellness, monitor the activity and safety of the elderly, and help the blind and visually impaired people to find their ways in both indoor and outdoor environments.
